About Freedom From Pain
Commitment to Your Healing Journey
At Freedom From Pain Advanced Physical and Massage Therapy, we take a practical, individualized approach to helping people move better, feel better, and get back to living their lives. Led by Dr. Shawna Townsend, our clinic blends traditional physical therapy, advanced rehabilitation, and customized massage therapy to address everything from everyday aches and injuries to chronic pain and long-standing limitations. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all treatment plan, we look at the whole person, identify what is driving the problem, and build care around their specific needs, goals, and lifestyle.

About Dr. Shawna
Hi, I'm Shawna Townsend, and I am the owner of Freedom From Pain.
I graduated with a master’s in physical therapy from Wichita State University (Kansas) in 1993, Received a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2010 from Regis University, and later certified as a orthopedic manual physical therapist in 2004 through Maitland seminars (COMT) and have maintained that certification since. I also have a massage therapy license since 2001 and have had a massage business out of my home in Nixa until the move to Ozark June of 2023 and changed the name of it to Freedom From Pain Advanced Physical and Massage Therapy.
I worked for Cox-Health for 26 of my 33 years of being a physical therapist. Currently in my business I am doing a combination of physical and massage therapy specializing in acute whiplash, chronic pain, spine pain, pelvic pain, headaches, concussion, unusual pain that others have trouble with, and manual therapy. See manual therapy techniques in the services section. So, I’m a non-traditional massage and physical therapist, and don’t really do relaxation massage, but very much therapeutic treatments. I have also taught classes for chronic pain patients called Explain Pain, joint pain classes with a naturopathic doctor and fall prevention.
I live in Nixa, Missouri and have my business in Ozark MO. I have a husband, two kids, and a grandson. But most importantly, I am very active in my church and Encounter Ministry and am happy to share my faith with anyone interested or pray for people who request it.

About Dr. Dan
Hello, Ozark and the greater Springfield area of Missouri!
My name is Dr. Dan Coupe. I am a nomad by nature and have decided to reside in Southwest Missouri to continue to grow as a clinician and to further provide pathways to healing through compassion. I have been practicing out-patient orthopedic physical therapy for 10 years from WA to FL to CO to MO. During this time frame, I have been exposed to an eclectic group of physical therapists and mentors that have helped to shape my holistic treatment approach.
In March 2026, I completed a Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy with specialties in spinal and joint manipulation, advanced dry needling, and advanced orthopedic assessment and application. A Fellowship in physical therapy is similar in intensity and purpose as a Fellowship that an orthopedic surgeon may seek. The purpose is to propel oneself in knowledge, skills, and abilities to help patients to heal, restore function, and gain strength.
I enjoy helping others and will do my best to find answers and solutions. Whether the pain or issue is related to sports, recreation, or daily life affecting the neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles, I will find the cause of the problem and develop solutions to help ease and correct the issue.
In my free time, I like to play. I enjoy running, sprinting, hiking, lifting heavy things and putting them down, and martial arts. I have previously provided personal training to others and held strength and conditioning certifications. One of my favorite activities with my family is online auto racing on Saturdays.
I look forward to helping Ozark, Springfield, Nixa, and the surrounding areas to find peace, love, joy, and happiness in your journey toward healing.

About Amy
My name is Amy Cornell, and I’m a licensed massage therapist with 20 years of experience in this wonderful industry. I’ve been giving shoulder massages since I was about five years old, and in 2005 I decided to turn that lifelong passion into a career. I graduated from PMTC in 2006, and my journey began—what an amazing ride it has been.
I specialize in Precision Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue Technique, Positional Release Technique, Myofascial Release, Swedish Relaxation, and Salt Stones Therapy. Using these techniques I have been able to help clients with all types of pain from; headaches, frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, lupus, and many other pain disorders over the past two decades. I blend everything I’ve learned into a fully customized massage experience for each client, designed to meet their unique needs and support lasting relief. I love getting stuck people unstuck, especially if that client has been in pain for years. I also like to educate my clients on the benefits of regular massage therapy.
I’m a Springfield native and love living in the Ozarks. I’m married to my wonderful husband, and together we adore our three cats. We’re active members of our church, and when I’m not in the treatment room, you’ll often find me cooking, bowling, and singing karaoke.
